Urumqi Tianshan International Airport has resumed fresh seafood imports from Pakistan for the first time in two years, marking the reopening of its inspection site for inbound aquatic products.
A 1,292-kilogram shipment, including black pomfret, prawns, hairtail, and grouper, arrived on China Southern Airlines flight CZ6008 from Islamabad after two months of coordination between importers, customs, and airport authorities. Officials expedited clearance by pre-arranging inspections and ensuring compliance across all checkpoints.
Previously, Xinjiang’s seafood supply relied on China’s coastal regions, increasing transit time and costs. Direct air shipments from Pakistan now ensure faster delivery, fresher products, and lower expenses. The move also strengthens regional trade ties, as Pakistan’s deep-sea fisheries are known for supplying premium seafood that is gaining popularity among Chinese consumers.
Xinjiang Airport Group is now seeking official approval to import edible aquatic animals on a larger scale. Leveraging its transport network across Asia, Europe, and Africa, the group plans to bring more high-value imports such as cherries, lobsters, and salmon directly to local markets.
Meanwhile, Pakistan’s exports of dental instruments and appliances to China increased 4% year-on-year in the first half of 2025, reaching $2 million. Industry analysts attribute this growth to competitive pricing, strategic trade agreements, and the manufacturing capabilities of Sialkot’s globally recognised medical equipment cluster.
