United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has praised China and the European Union for reaffirming their commitment to deepen cooperation on climate change and accelerate the global just transition.
Recognising both as economic powerhouses, Guterres emphasised that sustained joint efforts from China and the EU are crucial to making COP30 in Brazil a defining moment in the global response to the climate crisis.
The UN chief reiterated his broader call to all G20 nations, urging them to submit 2035 Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) that are economy-wide, fully inclusive of all emissions, and aligned with the 1.5-degree target. He stressed the importance of presenting a credible pathway away from fossil fuels in line with the outcomes of the First Global Stocktake.
Guterres’ statement underscores the importance of multilateral climate action and the leadership role expected from major economies in shaping a sustainable future.
