Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Friday performed the groundbreaking of the long-awaited T-Chowk Flyover Project at the Islamabad Expressway, calling it a milestone for easing daily traffic congestion in Rawalpindi and Islamabad.
The Rs 1,495 million project, to be completed in 150 days by February 2026, is being financed entirely through the Capital Development Authority’s (CDA) self-funding. Importantly, the design avoids any additional land acquisition, saving Rs 7 billion.
The new flyover will span 1.034 kilometres with an 11.30-meter width, featuring modern street lighting and horticulture development. Once completed, it is expected to handle nearly 42,000 vehicles daily, significantly reducing bottlenecks at Rawat, the entry point of Islamabad that sees over 100,000 vehicles a day.
Addressing the ceremony, the prime minister praised Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi, CDA, and NESPAK for planning the project efficiently and urged strict adherence to the highest quality standards. He stressed that no compromise on quality or timelines will be tolerated.
Highlighting Islamabad’s growing importance as the host of the upcoming SCO Summit, the PM directed authorities to accelerate beautification efforts, including plantation drives with saplings gifted by Tajikistan. He also hinted at another major public interest initiative, the introduction of a railcar service between the twin cities.
Interior Minister Naqvi, while speaking on the occasion, assured the timely completion of the project, adding that the Islamabad Expressway is already signal-free up to T-Chowk. He noted that the T-Chowk Flyover is the final missing piece to ease traffic flow on the capital’s busiest artery.
Officials briefed the PM that special monitoring teams have been deployed to ensure work quality and timely delivery. The project, once completed, will not only serve commuters but also strengthen connectivity between Islamabad, Punjab, AJK, and the G.T. Road.
