Punjab Minister for Minorities Affairs, Ramesh Singh Arora, stated that the Punjab government, led by Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif, is taking concrete steps to protect minority rights and promote their meaningful political participation.
He spoke at a seminar titled “Minority Issues in Pakistan: Political Agency or Party Proxy — The Representation Crisis,” organized by the Centre for Public Policy and Governance at Forman Christian College University in Lahore.
The minister emphasized that while minorities are constitutionally represented, improving the electoral system would ensure their representatives effectively serve and reflect their communities’ interests. He highlighted that minority inclusion in mainstream decision-making is crucial for building an inclusive society.
Policy experts, academics, and civil society representatives attending the seminar discussed challenges in minority representation and stressed the importance of independent minority legislators acting in the best interest of their communities.
