The Punjab government has approved the rollout of Chinese electric buses across 10 districts to expand green transport and modernize public mobility.
Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz chaired the meeting where officials reviewed transit progress and future plans.
Electric Buses Rollout Across Districts
Authorities will deploy the buses in Attock, Bhakkar, Hafizabad, Khanewal, Layyah, Sheikhupura, Gujranwala, Sialkot, Mandi Bahauddin, and Okara. The move supports Pakistan’s shift toward sustainable infrastructure under the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor.
Officials say the project will cut pollution, improve fuel efficiency, and upgrade public transport systems.
Phased Delivery and Infrastructure Plan
The government will receive 100 buses this month. It will add 350 more by mid-May and 264 by the end of June.
Authorities will build electric bus depots in each division to support maintenance and charging needs.
Maryam Nawaz directed officials to expand the project further. The government plans to deploy up to 1,500 electric buses at the tehsil level.
Mass Transit and Public Usage
Officials also reviewed transit projects in Gujranwala and Faisalabad. These projects follow modern systems inspired by Chinese models.
More than 125,000 passengers have already used free transport services across 21 routes. The initiative has completed thousands of trips so far.
E-Taxi and Future Mobility Plans
The government expects 194 electric taxis to arrive in May and 208 more in June under the e-taxi scheme.
Maryam Nawaz instructed departments to speed up metro station upgrades and approve new infrastructure designs. She also urged faster progress on the e-bike project for government employees.
