The Punjab government has launched a Mobile Soil Testing Lab initiative to restore and improve the fertility of agricultural lands across South Punjab. The project, in collaboration with the Soil Fertility Department, aims to provide farmers with on-site soil and water analysis to boost productivity.
Seven mobile labs are being deployed in the first phase, covering major districts including Multan, Dera Ghazi Khan, and Rajanpur, with eight additional labs to follow. These labs will collect soil and water samples, assess nutrient content, and guide farmers on remedial measures for enhancing yields.
Officials highlighted that recent floods severely affected soil health, especially in clay-rich areas, while sandy soils benefited from improved water absorption. In Khanewal, for example, soil tests revealed high salinity and nutrient deficiencies, particularly phosphorus, potassium, and iron, limiting crop growth.
After analysis, detailed reports are shared with farmers, along with advice on fertilizers and irrigation practices. Awareness campaigns through seminars, radio, and TV programs are also being conducted to educate farmers on the importance of annual soil testing for sustainable crop production.
The initiative is expected to improve agricultural output, particularly in flood-hit regions, by bringing scientific support directly to farmers’ doorsteps. Authorities emphasized that mobile labs will help farmers make informed decisions, ensuring healthier soils and higher productivity.
