Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Monday congratulated the leadership and people of Cambodia and Thailand on signing the Kuala Lumpur Peace Accord, calling it a milestone for regional peace and diplomacy.
In a post on X (formerly Twitter), the prime minister praised former U.S. President Donald Trump for his instrumental role in brokering the deal. He described the accord as a historic achievement that proves how diplomacy can resolve long-standing disputes.
PM Shehbaz Praises Trump’s Role in Peace Diplomacy
PM Shehbaz wrote, “Another historic day for peace and diplomacy. My deep appreciation to President Donald Trump for his instrumental role in advancing peace through the Kuala Lumpur Accord, the Gaza Peace Plan, and his resolute efforts for stability in the Middle East and South Asia, saving millions of lives across the globe.”
Diplomatic observers noted that PM Shehbaz’s acknowledgement reflects Pakistan’s support for international efforts aimed at promoting peace and regional stability.
Details of the Kuala Lumpur Peace Accord
The Peace Accord, signed between Cambodia and Thailand, expands on an earlier ceasefire and aims to end years of border tensions. The agreement also includes the release of 18 Cambodian soldiers held as prisoners and the withdrawal of heavy weapons from disputed areas.
For decades, the two Southeast Asian neighbours have faced repeated clashes along their frontier. This accord, signed during the ASEAN Summit in Kuala Lumpur, marks a major step toward lasting peace.
Regional Diplomacy and Global Recognition
Prime Minister Shehbaz also commended Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim for his continuous efforts in promoting peace and regional cooperation. He described the signing of the Peace Accord as “another victory for diplomacy and dialogue.”
Analysts believe that PM Shehbaz’s remarks further reinforce Trump’s growing reputation as a global peace mediator. His recent efforts, including facilitating talks in Gaza, easing Pakistan-India tensions, and mediating between Azerbaijan and Armenia, have strengthened his image as a leader who favours negotiation over conflict.
