Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has directed authorities to expedite the completion of the under-construction Technology Park in Islamabad, expressing dissatisfaction over the slow pace of work and emphasising its strategic importance for Pakistan’s economic and technological growth.
Originally scheduled for inauguration on August 14, the 720,000-square-foot facility is being developed by the Ministry of IT and Telecommunications in collaboration with the Pakistan Software Export Board (PSEB). Designed to meet international standards, the project will feature modern office spaces, an incubation centre, business support facilities, R&D laboratories, a Tier III data centre with high redundancy, an auditorium, and parking for up to 1,200 vehicles.
During his visit, the prime minister called for enhanced coordination among departments, strict adherence to timelines, and regular progress reports. He stressed that the park will be a game-changer for the IT sector, creating jobs for youth, boosting digital exports, and bridging the digital divide.
Pakistan’s IT sector generated $3.8 billion in export revenue in the last fiscal year, marking a 19% year-on-year increase. The government has set an ambitious target to raise IT exports to $30 billion by introducing a complete digital ecosystem, attracting foreign investment, and tapping into new markets, particularly in the Gulf region.
“The Technology Park will strengthen Pakistan’s position in the global IT market, foster innovation, and support entrepreneurship,” PM Shehbaz said, adding that there is no room for delays in projects of such national significance.
