Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif met with President Ilham Aliyev of Azerbaijan on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Council of Heads of State in Tianjin, China (August 31–September 1, 2025).
The leaders held wide-ranging talks covering trade, investment, energy, connectivity, defence, education, and cultural exchanges, noting satisfaction over the upward trajectory of relations. Both sides underlined the importance of regional connectivity and enhanced multilateral cooperation, particularly under the SCO, to promote prosperity and integration.
Shehbaz Sharif congratulated Aliyev on the signing of the peace agreement between Azerbaijan and Armenia, calling it a landmark step for stability in the South Caucasus. The two also discussed global challenges and vowed to maintain close coordination in international forums.
President Aliyev expressed condolences over the losses from Pakistan’s devastating floods and assured that the people of Azerbaijan stand firmly with Pakistan. Prime Minister Shehbaz also extended an invitation to President Aliyev to visit Pakistan soon.
