Pakistan voiced concern at the UN over the ongoing high-intensity war in Ukraine, citing erosion of trust and threats to peaceful coexistence. Ambassador Asim Iftikhar Ahmad urged the Security Council to invest more in dialogue, diplomacy, and Confidence and Security-Building Measures (CBMs) to prevent conflict.
Speaking after a briefing from OSCE Chairperson Elina Valtonen, the Pakistani envoy stressed the importance of rekindling the spirit of Helsinki. He noted that international cooperation grounded in the UN Charter is vital for maintaining global stability and avoiding confrontations.
Pakistan reaffirmed support for OSCE-UN cooperation, highlighting that regional and global organizations complement UN efforts in conflict prevention, transnational threat response, and post-conflict stabilization. The envoy stressed that peaceful dispute resolution is essential for maintaining sovereignty, human rights, and territorial integrity.
Valtonen criticized Russia’s war against Ukraine, calling it the largest and longest in Europe since World War II. She urged all states to support Ukraine in achieving a just and lasting peace while upholding the Helsinki Principles and UN Charter values.
