Pakistan’s sports manufacturing industry has achieved remarkable progress this year, with a significant rise in exports of basketballs, footballs, and volleyballs to China. This development highlights Pakistan’s growing status as a global hub for premium sports goods and reflects its strengthening economic ties with China.
Data from the General Administration of Customs of China (GACC) reveals that China imported $10.70 million worth of basketballs, footballs, and volleyballs from Pakistan (commodity code 95066210) in the first eleven months of 2024, marking a 6.68% increase compared to the same period last year.
Shaikh Muhammad Shariq, Chief Representative of the National Bank of Pakistan, noted that during his tenure in China, he has observed the nation’s growing interest in sports. This trend, driven by a health-conscious middle class and government-backed fitness initiatives, has created a robust market for sports goods. Pakistani footballs, a specialty of Sialkot manufacturers, remain a dominant export, while basketballs and volleyballs have gained traction due to their rising popularity in Chinese schools and professional leagues.
China’s expanding grassroots sports programs and preparations for hosting major sporting events have increased demand for high-quality sports equipment. This surge in exports underscores the strengthening trade ties between Pakistan and China under the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), Shaikh added.
Pakistani industry leaders are optimistic about continued growth in exports as Chinese companies increasingly recognize the reliability and craftsmanship of Pakistani manufacturers.
“We have upgraded our machinery and training programs to meet global standards. The growing demand for our sports goods in China validates our efforts and encourages us to explore other international markets,” said Muhammad Ahmed, a prominent exporter from Sialkot.
