China National Nuclear Corporation (CNNC) announced on Saturday that the country’s largest natural uranium project has successfully produced its first barrel of uranium, signaling the beginning of a new era in sustainable and intelligent uranium extraction in China.
The project, named “National No.1 Uranium,” is situated in Ordos, Inner Mongolia. As China’s biggest uranium production base in terms of capacity and built to top-tier standards, it set a record by being completed just one year after construction began.
Yuan Xu, chairman of China National Uranium Co., Ltd., a CNNC subsidiary, stated that the project represents a significant milestone in the development of China’s third-generation uranium mining and processing technology.
Yuan highlighted that the site incorporates essential aspects of modern uranium mining, such as a strong emphasis on environmental safeguards, remote-controlled operations, intelligent monitoring, and improvements in efficiency and quality.
He added that digitalization and intelligent systems have made the mining process more predictable and manageable, improving the control over the entire operation.
According to the China Energy Research Society, China currently ranks first globally in total nuclear power generation capacity, factoring in plants that are operational, under construction, or approved.
CNNC noted that the advanced technologies deployed in this demonstration project will soon be widely applied in other uranium-rich northern basins across China, accelerating the development of additional large-scale uranium mining operations.
