Pakistan and Bangladesh are moving towards a stronger economic partnership and exploring trade and energy ties following a high-level meeting between Federal Minister for Commerce Jam Kamal Khan and Bangladesh’s High Commissioner to Pakistan, Md. Iqbal Hussain Khan. The discussions focused on enhancing bilateral cooperation in trade, energy, logistics, and industrial linkages, underscoring a shared interest in building a robust regional economic framework.
Bangladesh Eyes Pakistani Coal and Limestone
A key outcome of the meeting for potential trade and energy ties was Bangladesh’s interest in importing Pakistani coal and limestone, critical for its energy and soda ash sectors. The Bangladeshi envoy highlighted the importance of these resources in powering key industries and appreciated Pakistan’s capacity to supply them.
Expanding Agricultural Trade
The two sides also explored agricultural trade, particularly Bangladesh’s pineapples and Pakistan’s mangoes. The export of mangoes is pending final technical clearances, while the import of pineapples received strong interest from the Pakistani side.
Strengthening Industrial and Textile Linkages
The meeting touched on enhancing textile sector collaboration and expanding exports of high-quality Sindh limestone. Additionally, Halal meat products were identified as another area for export from Pakistan to Bangladesh, aligning with both countries’ growing Halal markets.
Business-Friendly Reforms and Logistics
Both delegations acknowledged existing logistical hurdles and agreed on the importance of simplifying business visa processes to enable smoother commercial exchanges. The Bangladeshi High Commissioner praised the enthusiasm shown by local business chambers during his recent visits to Pakistan’s industrial zones.
Building Regional Value Chains
Minister Jam Kamal emphasised the broader regional value of this collaboration, stressing the importance of cooperation in energy, logistics, and food security. He reiterated Pakistan’s commitment to building a transformative economic relationship with Bangladesh.
Way Forward
The meeting concluded with a mutual commitment to develop sector-specific business linkages and to streamline trade frameworks. Both countries reaffirmed their intent to take practical steps toward deeper economic engagement under the shared vision of “Pakistan, Bangladesh Explore Trade and Energy Ties.”
