Pakistan has activated an emergency energy plan following the disruption of LNG supplies from Qatar amid escalating regional tensions, underscoring the country’s dependence on imported gas.
Officials said immediate steps are being taken to offset a potential shortfall, including restoring around 350 million cubic feet per day of previously curtailed domestic gas production. Authorities are also evaluating options to secure alternative LNG cargoes as shipping routes near the Strait of Hormuz face heightened risks.
Pakistan typically receives nine LNG cargoes per month from Qatar under long-term agreements, alongside one monthly shipment from Italy’s Eni. A prolonged disruption could strain pipeline pressures and impact fuel availability in the coming months.
To cushion the impact, the government may ramp up local oil and gas production and approach Azerbaijan’s SOCAR Trading Company for additional LNG supplies if required. However, availability could be limited due to existing international commitments.
