Pak FM, Ishaq Dar to attend China-led UNSC meeting in New York that will focus on multilateralism and global governance.
Pakistan’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister, Ishaq Dar, has arrived in New York to participate in a United Nations Security Council (UNSC) meeting focused on multilateralism and global governance, according to state-run media reports. The meeting, scheduled for February 18, will be chaired by Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, as China holds the council’s rotating presidency this month. The discussions take place amid increasing global concerns over multilateralism, particularly following former U.S. President Donald Trump’s return to the White House and escalating conflicts worldwide.
According to reports, Ishaq Dar landed in New York on Sunday to attend the high-level UNSC session set for Tuesday. Pakistan has welcomed China’s initiative to convene the meeting, emphasizing that it highlights the significance of multilateralism in addressing contemporary global challenges.
During the session, Dar will reaffirm Pakistan’s firm commitment to multilateralism and the United Nations’ role in fostering international peace, security, and sustainable development. He will also outline Pakistan’s priorities as a non-permanent UNSC member, advocating for dialogue, cooperation, and inclusive global governance.
Pakistan was elected as a non-permanent member of the UNSC for the 2025-2026 term in June 2024, securing 182 out of 193 votes, and officially commenced its two-year tenure on January 1, 2025.
On the sidelines of the UNSC meeting, Dar is expected to hold bilateral talks with fellow foreign ministers and senior UN officials. Additionally, he will engage with the media through interviews and a press conference aimed at US-based Pakistani journalists.
