The Institute of Kidney Diseases (IKD) at Hayatabad Medical Complex in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa is preparing to launch a robotic surgery program, which would be the first of its kind in the province. A recent live workshop with UK surgeons trained local doctors in robot-assisted procedures, highlighting their potential for complex urological operations.
Robotic surgery, once approved and implemented, will allow surgeons to perform precise operations through small incisions, reducing blood loss and speeding up recovery compared to conventional surgery. IKD already has experienced laparoscopic surgeons and fully equipped operating theaters, making the transition feasible with additional specialized training.
Initially, the program will target complex cases such as tumors, with plans to expand into transplant and other advanced procedures. IKD has submitted a formal proposal for government approval and funding. International partners have pledged to support surgeon training and technical guidance to ensure the successful launch of robotic surgery services in KP.
