A delegation from the Kuomintang (KMT), led by Cheng Li-wun, arrived in Shanghai to begin a multi-day visit to mainland China.
The visit will continue until Sunday and includes stops in Jiangsu Province, Shanghai, and Beijing. Notably, this marks the first time in a decade that a KMT chairperson has led a delegation to the mainland.
Focus on Dialogue and Stability
Officials view the visit as an important step in strengthening dialogue between the KMT and the Communist Party of China (CPC). According to Chinese authorities, such exchanges can help maintain peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait.
Moreover, increased engagement between the two sides aims to promote the peaceful development of cross-Strait relations.
Commitment to Peaceful Engagement
Cheng Li-wun stated that the visit reflects public opinion in Taiwan and supports peaceful engagement. She emphasized the need to choose dialogue over conflict for regional stability and future generations.
She also reaffirmed adherence to the 1992 Consensus, which supports the one-China principle and opposes Taiwan independence.
Historical Context and Ongoing Relations
Cross-Strait relations trace back to the civil war between the KMT and the CPC in the mid-20th century. After 1949, the KMT retreated to Taiwan, while the People’s Republic of China was established on the mainland.
Despite longstanding political differences, both sides continue to engage through dialogue and exchanges. Many analysts believe such visits can reduce tensions and support long-term regional stability.
