Karakoram International University (KIU) and the China-Pakistan Joint Research Centre (CPJRC) have taken a major step forward by signing a Document of Understanding (DoU) to establish the Karakoram Observation and Research Station on Natural Hazards and Environment (KORS). This initiative is part of a government-approved project in Pakistan. The signing ceremony and a panel discussion took place on February 19, 2025, at the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) in Chengdu, China. The research center, to be built at KIU, is a collaborative effort between KIU and CPJRC, which operates under Pakistan’s Public Sector Development Program (PSDP). Designed as a center for joint research, KORS will unite experts from both countries to tackle key global challenges.
The cooperation agreement was officially signed by Engr. Prof. Dr. Attaullah Shah, Vice Chancellor of KIU, and Prof. SU Lijun, Director-General of CPJRC, who represented the Chinese delegation. The event was graced by esteemed guests, including Prof. CUI Peng from the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Prof. Hong Tianhua, Executive Director of CPJRC, as well as senior researchers and academicians from CPJRC and CAS.
Following the DoU signing, a panel discussion was held to explore collaborative solutions for urgent environmental issues. In his keynote speech, Vice Chancellor Dr. Attaullah Shah emphasized the long-standing and historically significant ties between Pakistan and China. He highlighted the research center’s potential to make notable contributions in the study of natural hazards, climate change, unpredictable weather patterns, and related scientific fields. Other speakers reinforced the importance of global collaboration in addressing these critical issues. They stressed the need for scientific advancements to counteract the effects of climate challenges and to build more resilient communities. KIU, known for its research on Glacial Lake Outburst Floods (GLOFs) and climate change, reaffirmed its dedication to strengthening partnerships to advance scientific knowledge in these areas.
As part of the academic exchange, Vice Chancellor Dr. Attaullah Shah presented a copy of the book Pakistan and the Belt & Road Initiative – A Journey Through Politics & Economy, published by KIU’s China Study Centre, to senior academicians.
The discussion concluded with participants and speakers reaffirming their commitment to strengthening collaborative research efforts and working towards the ambitious objectives of the research station.
