A Senate standing committee was informed that the feasibility study for the Gwadar Railway project, prepared by an international firm, has been completed. Officials from the Ministry of Railways said the project will soon be presented to the relevant board for final approval as part of broader rail sector reforms.
The committee was briefed that the proposed railway line will link Gwadar Port with Balochistan’s mineral-rich regions and connect Pakistan’s rail network with regional routes via Iran, improving access to Turkey and Russia while reducing pressure on Karachi Port. Several funding options, including collaboration with mining companies and international lenders, are under consideration.
Lawmakers also reviewed additional rail initiatives, including Main Line-4 and the Gwadar–Nokundi route, along with land acquisition progress and operational outsourcing measures. The panel stressed modernising existing infrastructure alongside expansion and highlighted the importance of aligning Pakistan’s railway development with global best practices.
