Panic gripped the Saleh Pat area after a woman sustained serious injuries in a crocodile attack along the Nara Canal near RD-115.
The victim, identified as Kariman Bibi, was reportedly washing clothes at the canal when a large crocodile lunged at her, biting her leg and dragging her towards deeper water. Her husband, Hub-e-Ali, acted swiftly, pulling her to safety despite her critical injuries. She was rushed to a nearby hospital for emergency treatment.
Following the incident, the Sindh Wildlife Department initiated an inquiry. A team from the Sukkur Wildlife Division, led by Deputy Conservator and Area Wildlife Inspector Imam Bakhsh Samoon, visited the Sukkur Civil Hospital to meet the victim. However, hospital staff informed them that the family had already left without notice.
The department is gathering medical reports, treatment details, and witness accounts to confirm the attack. Officials have long expressed concerns over illegal settlements and huts along the Nara Canal, a known habitat of Sindh’s native marsh crocodile (Crocodylus palustris).
Experts say the marsh crocodile, though smaller and less aggressive than Nile and saltwater species, can turn dangerous if its territory is disturbed. The slow-moving waters and outer banks of the Nara Canal provide an ideal habitat for the species, which often basks during the day or shelters in burrows.
Locals have been warned to avoid the canal until the crocodile is captured or relocated. Authorities have yet to announce concrete measures for its removal, but the attack has heightened calls for urgent action to ensure public safety.
