Chinese envoy urges foreign forces to end illegal military presence in Syria and emphasized China’s support for Syria in counterterrorism efforts.
A Chinese envoy urged Israel to halt its attacks on Syria and called for the removal of foreign forces illegally stationed in the country.
At a UN Security Council briefing on Syria, Geng Shuang, China’s deputy permanent representative to the UN, emphasized the need to respect Syria’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
Geng appealed to all parties involved to show maximum restraint, work towards regional stability, and specifically urged Israel to stop its attacks on Syria, while also calling for the withdrawal of foreign military forces.
He encouraged major external powers to contribute positively to easing tensions in the region.
Geng expressed China’s support for UN Special Envoy for Syria, Geir Pedersen, and his ongoing work with all parties under the Syrian-led and Syrian-owned principle, emphasizing the importance of dialogue mechanisms with the Syrian government to advance a political solution.
Furthermore, he stressed that a successful political process requires a secure environment, and reiterated China’s support for the Syrian government’s intensified counter-terrorism efforts. Geng called on the international community to unite in combating terrorism within Syria in accordance with international law and UN Security Council resolutions.
On the humanitarian front, Geng noted that the cross-border relief mechanism has been stable due to joint efforts by the Syrian government and the UN. He urged all parties to show flexibility and work towards resuming cross-line relief operations.
Geng also called on donors to fulfill their aid commitments and ensure sufficient funding for humanitarian projects across Syria. He also stressed the immediate need to end unilateral sanctions and illegal activities that undermine Syria’s economic recovery and social development.
