Chinese envoy renews appeal for external armed forces to withdraw from Libya emphasizing on the importance of political transition for peace in Libya.
A senior Chinese diplomat, Dai Bing, reiterated the call for the withdrawal of external armed forces and mercenaries from Libya, emphasizing that Libya’s peaceful reconstruction is at a critical juncture. Dai, China’s deputy permanent representative to the UN, spoke at a Security Council briefing, stressing that political transition is essential for Libya’s long-term peace and stability.
He urged stronger dialogue and consultation to overcome Libya’s political impasse and mentioned recent developments such as local election efforts and the appointment of a new central bank governor. He called for more consensus to resume political negotiations and build unified state institutions.
Dai emphasized the importance of respecting Libya’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, urging the international community to support African solutions to African problems. He reiterated the need for a smooth and orderly withdrawal of external forces to aid in Libya’s political resolution.
Additionally, Dai called for reducing conflict, improving security, and addressing humanitarian challenges in Libya. He urged Libyan parties to prioritize the country’s interests, comply with the ceasefire, and cooperate to safeguard stability.
He encouraged the international community to assist Libya with counter-terrorism and border security efforts, while also increasing humanitarian support. Dai also advocated for Libya to manage its oil resources to benefit its people and urged the UN Security Council to address concerns about Libya’s frozen assets abroad.
Finally, Dai expressed China’s support for the UN Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) and its role in advancing political transition and achieving lasting peace in the country.
