Chinese envoy reiterates call for immediate ceasefire in Gaza highlight the need for conflict resolution and peace in the Middle East.
On Wednesday, a Chinese diplomat reiterated the urgent need for a ceasefire in Gaza. Dai Bing, the charge d’affaires of China’s Permanent Mission to the UN, highlighted the dire situation, noting that the conflict has lasted over 300 days, resulting in the deaths of more than 10,000 women and leaving over a million Palestinian women and girls facing famine.
Dai Bing urged all parties involved to align with the global consensus and work together to fully implement Security Council resolutions. He stressed that achieving an immediate ceasefire is crucial to ending the humanitarian crisis and preventing further escalation of the conflict.
The ambassador underscored that preventing and resolving conflicts, and ensuring a peaceful environment for civilians, including women, are essential for advancing the Women, Peace, and Security (WPS) agenda.
Dai noted that regardless of any changes or adjustments in peace operations, the primary goal should always be to promote political solutions to conflict areas, maintaining this as the core mandate.
He acknowledged that due to evolving conditions and the needs of the countries involved, some UN missions might need to withdraw or be adjusted. He emphasized the importance of achieving smooth transitions while preserving peace and stability in the affected regions.
China’s Support for Peace Operations
China supports the UN and the Security Council in developing clear and practical plans for transitioning and exiting peace operations. This support includes respecting the wishes of the countries involved and aligning with their development strategies to ensure a seamless transition.
Highlighting the significance of women’s roles in peace efforts, Dai also mentioned that Security Council Resolution 1325 supports women’s equal participation in peace processes and calls for better protection of women and girls in conflict zones.
He expressed support for elevating the protection of women’s rights to national priorities and investing in their empowerment and development as part of the 2030 Agenda. This would enhance women’s representation and influence across various aspects of society.
