China’s C919 Makes First International Commercial Flight

China’s homegrown C919 passenger jet completed its first international commercial flight on Wednesday, marking a major milestone in the country’s ambition to compete in the global aviation market.

Operated by Air China, the narrow-body aircraft flew from Beijing to Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia, opening a new chapter for China’s domestically developed passenger aircraft.

C919 Flies to Mongolia

The C919 departed Beijing Capital International Airport at 3:17 p.m. local time on Wednesday. It landed in Mongolia’s capital at 4:58 p.m., according to public flight data.

The new Air China service will connect Beijing and Ulaanbaatar with one round-trip flight each day, according to Xinhua.

The international route represents an important step for the C919 after more than three years of domestic commercial operations.

China Challenges Boeing and Airbus

The C919 is designed to compete in the narrow-body aircraft market dominated by Boeing 737 and Airbus A320 families.

However, the aircraft has not yet received certification from US or European aviation regulators. Its expansion into international markets will therefore depend partly on gaining approvals in additional jurisdictions.

Beijing sees the C919 as an important part of efforts to reduce reliance on foreign aerospace technology and establish a stronger position in the global commercial aviation industry.

C919 Enters Regular Service

The C919 completed its first commercial flight in May 2023, when it flew from Shanghai to Beijing.

Since then, airlines have used the aircraft on several domestic routes. It has also operated services between mainland China and Hong Kong.

COMAC has continued promoting the aircraft internationally. The company displayed the C919 at the Singapore Airshow in 2024 and 2026 and at the Dubai Airshow in 2025.

Aircraft Still Uses Foreign Components

Although COMAC manufactures the C919 in China, the aircraft still relies on components sourced from several foreign countries, including the United States.

This means the C919 represents both a major achievement in China’s aerospace manufacturing capabilities and an ongoing effort to develop a more independent commercial aviation supply chain.

Growing International Ambitions

The C919 is not COMAC’s first aircraft to enter foreign markets.

The company has already expanded internationally with its smaller C909 regional jet, which can accommodate between 78 and 97 passengers.

The C919’s first international commercial service marks a larger step, however. Regular international operations could help COMAC gain valuable experience in overseas markets while building confidence among passengers and airlines.

As China continues developing its commercial aviation industry, the C919 could become an increasingly important part of the country’s strategy to establish a stronger presence in the global passenger aircraft market.
