China’s Commercial Aircraft Corporation (Comac) has injected 634 million yuan ($91.76M) into its subsidiary, Chengdu Airlines, which serves as the launch customer for the C909 regional jet. This investment has nearly tripled the airline’s registered capital, from 680 million yuan to 2 billion yuan, providing resources to expand international operations.
The funding aims to widen the C909’s global footprint, targeting routes across Southeast Asia, Central Asia, and Russia. Chengdu Airlines has already begun recruiting partners for new routes, including Vladivostok and Khabarovsk in Russia, and Osh in Kyrgyzstan, making the C909 increasingly visible on international commercial flights.
The C909 expansion is part of China’s broader plan to compete with major global aircraft manufacturers, including Boeing and Airbus. While the C919 narrowbody jet remains primarily domestic, the C909’s growth signals China’s ambitions to establish its regional airliners as credible alternatives in international markets.
