At the United Nations, China has called for a united global front against terrorism, urging nations to set aside ideological and geopolitical divides.
Speaking at a Security Council meeting on global terrorism threats, China’s Deputy Permanent Representative to the UN, Geng Shuang, said terrorism remains a shared enemy of humanity. He emphasised that coordinated international efforts are vital to counter groups like Islamic State, al-Qaida, East Turkestan Islamic Movement, Pakistani Taliban, and the Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA) and its Majeed Brigade, which remain active in South Asia and Afghanistan.
Geng noted that Syria must meet its obligations by countering all UN-designated terrorist organisations. He cautioned the Council to act carefully when considering adjustments to the sanctions regime on Syria due to the complexity of its security challenges.
China also urged Afghan authorities to intensify their counter-terrorism measures and use regional mechanisms such as the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation to root out threats. Welcoming Washington’s move to designate the BLA and its Majeed Brigade as terrorist groups, Beijing expressed hope that the UN Security Council will soon follow suit.
The Chinese envoy further highlighted the shift of Islamic State operations toward Africa, stressing the need for financial, technical, and intelligence support to African nations. He underlined China’s role in assisting developing countries, particularly in Africa, to strengthen counter-terrorism capabilities under its Global Security Initiative.
“China stands ready to work with all partners to advance the counter-terrorism cause and contribute to global peace and security,” Geng said.
