A Chinese envoy on Thursday emphasized the importance of upholding the international system centered on the United Nations, as the world marked the 80th anniversary of the signing of the UN Charter.
Fu Cong, China’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, recalled that eighty years ago, in the aftermath of the World Anti-Fascist War, the San Francisco Conference unanimously adopted the UN Charter. This foundational document established the principles of multilateralism, set basic norms for international relations, and outlined a clear path for humanity’s future.
He urged countries to collectively protect the hard-won outcomes of World War II and reject any attempts to misrepresent or distort historical facts.
Addressing a UN General Assembly event commemorating the Charter’s anniversary, Fu called for firm support of the international system with the UN at its core, the rule-based international order, and a multilateral trading system grounded in international law.
He also stressed the importance of adhering to the UN Charter’s principles, including respect for the sovereignty, independence, and territorial integrity of all nations.
Fu advocated for a security vision that is common, comprehensive, cooperative, and sustainable, and emphasized resolving disputes peacefully while opposing the arbitrary use or threat of force.
He highlighted the need to embrace genuine multilateralism, uphold the UN’s central role in global affairs, advance the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, and collaborate to tackle shared global challenges.
Fu concluded by noting that China was the first nation to sign the UN Charter and remains committed to its principles. He affirmed that China will continue to act to preserve global peace, promote development, and contribute to building a shared future for humanity.
