Chongqing has introduced the world’s longest outdoor escalator system, known as the “Wushan Goddess Escalator,” designed to improve mobility in its steep urban terrain.
Massive Engineering Structure Spanning Nearly One Kilometer
The system stretches 905 meters with a vertical rise of 242.14 meters, roughly equal to an 80-story building. It combines 21 escalators, 8 elevators, 4 moving walkways, 2 pedestrian bridges, and 2 overpasses.

Designed to Cut Travel Time Significantly
The project reduces travel time between upper and lower Shen Nu Avenue in Wushan County from one hour to just 20 minutes. As a result, daily commuting for residents has become significantly faster and more efficient.
Trial Operation and Fare System
The escalator began trial operations on February 17, with a fare of 3 yuan per ride. Authorities are expected to review pricing after the trial phase concludes.
Improving Accessibility in Mountainous Regions
The system is intended to address mobility challenges in Chongqing’s mountainous landscape. It enhances connectivity between elevated and lower urban zones while supporting local transportation needs.
