Leaders from over 20 countries and heads of 10 international organizations are expected to attend the upcoming Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit and related events in Tianjin, announced Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi on Tuesday.
Wang, speaking at a joint press briefing with SCO Secretary-General Nurlan Yermekbayev, confirmed that the SCO Tianjin summit will take place from August 31 to September 1.
On the same day, Wang, who is also a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, chaired a meeting of the SCO Council of Foreign Ministers in Tianjin.
The meeting was attended by high-level officials including the foreign ministers and deputy prime ministers from Belarus, India, Iran, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Pakistan, Russia, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, as well as top SCO officials including Secretary-General Yermekbayev and Director of the SCO Regional Anti-Terrorist Structure Ularbek Sharsheev.
In his remarks, Wang urged member states to strengthen consensus on enhancing the SCO, emphasizing historical responsibility and a future-oriented approach. He laid out five proposals to guide the organization’s future direction.
He called on members to uphold the original mission and the “Shanghai Spirit,” strengthen security foundations, pursue mutual gains for development, promote regional friendship, and defend fairness and justice.
Wang appreciated the strong support China received from other member states during its rotating chairmanship, adding that the SCO is poised to enter a phase of high-quality development through collective efforts.
The participating countries praised China’s leadership and achievements as the rotating chair and pledged continued cooperation to ensure the success of the Tianjin summit.
Member states acknowledged the SCO’s critical role in enhancing strategic trust, driving regional development, preserving shared security, and fostering people-to-people connections.
Amid global instability, participants emphasized the need to reinforce the Shanghai Spirit, strengthen unity, safeguard sovereignty and territorial integrity, and combat terrorism, extremism, and separatism.
They also agreed to expand cooperation in diverse areas, encourage intercivilizational dialogue, uphold the UN’s authority, resist unilateralism, and resolve international conflicts through dialogue and negotiation, contributing positively to global peace and development.
