China starts building its section of China-Laos 500kV power link, aimed at boosting energy cooperation between the two countries.
Construction work on the Chinese segment of the China-Laos 500-kV power interconnection project officially began on Monday, marking another significant milestone in the deepening cooperation between the two countries, following the success of the China-Laos Railway.
According to Yunnan Power Grid Co., Ltd., a subsidiary of China Southern Power Grid Co., Ltd. (CSG), the Chinese portion of the project includes a 145-kilometer, 500-kV transmission line starting from the Dai Autonomous Prefecture of Xishuangbanna in Yunnan Province and extending into Laos. It also involves the expansion of an existing 500-kV transformer substation in the same region.
This power project is considered a core component of the broader action plan to establish a China-Laos community with a shared future. The project is expected to be completed and begin operations in 2026.
Once in service, the interconnection will provide a two-way power transfer capacity of 1.5 million kilowatts and enable the transmission of around 3 billion kilowatt-hours of clean energy.
Construction of the Lao section began earlier on February 26, with an official launch ceremony held in the capital city, Vientiane.
While the Lao segment is being developed by Electricité du Laos Transmission Company Limited, the Chinese side of the project is being executed under the management of China Southern Power Grid.
