The China-Pakistan “Jingchu Workshop” project launched an international training programme on new energy vehicle (NEV) technology at Xiangyang Polytechnic University on October 13.
Five trainees from Daewoo Pakistan Express Bus Service Limited are participating in the 19-day programme. The training focuses on NEVs and intelligent connected vehicles.
Training Focuses on Practical NEV Skills
According to Xiangyang Polytechnic University, the programme addresses the technical needs of Pakistan’s emerging NEV industry.
It combines classroom instruction with practical training. Participants will learn core NEV principles, basic intelligent connected vehicle functions, and common fault diagnosis and troubleshooting methods.
The programme aims to develop local specialists who can operate, maintain and support new energy vehicle technology.
Trainees will also visit Chinese companies working in emerging industries, including NEVs and the low-altitude economy. The visits will introduce them to industrial applications and technology developments. Cultural exchange activities will further strengthen their understanding of China and its industrial ecosystem.
Pakistan Targets 30% NEV Sales by 2030
The training supports Pakistan’s transition towards cleaner transport. Under its New Energy Vehicle Policy 2025–2030, Pakistan aims to increase NEVs’ share of new vehicle sales to 30% by 2030.
The policy also sets workforce development targets through two initiatives. The New Energy Apprenticeship Programme (NEAP) aims to train 10,000 apprentices, while the New Energy Skills Programme (NESP) targets 5,000 technical trainees.
Together, these programmes aim to provide direct training to at least 15,000 people.
The policy calls for cooperation among universities, vocational institutions, provincial governments, the New Energy Vehicles Center and the Engineering Development Board. This approach aims to support local skills development and the growth of Pakistan’s domestic NEV industry.
Jingchu Workshop Expands China-Pakistan Cooperation
Xiangyang Polytechnic University has jointly developed the Jingchu Workshop with Pakistani government departments, universities and Dongfeng-affiliated companies under the Belt and Road Initiative.
The project draws on Xiangyang’s industrial links with Dongfeng Motor and supports technical education and cooperation in the automotive sector.
In 2025, the workshop provided NEV teacher training for government departments and schools in Lahore and Rawalpindi.
Supporting Pakistan’s Green Transport Transition
As the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) moves into a phase of upgrading and expansion, technical training is becoming an important part of industrial cooperation.
Project organisers told Gwadar Pro that they plan to expand training for skilled NEV professionals and deepen economic cooperation and cultural exchange between the two countries.
The initiative aims to strengthen Pakistan’s capacity to adopt, operate and maintain new energy vehicles while supporting future cooperation in the automotive industry.
