China has emerged as the global leader in artificial intelligence (AI) patents, holding an impressive 60% share of the world total, according to a report released at the 2025 World Internet Conference (WIC) Wuzhen Summit. The country also leads in 6G patent applications, accounting for around 40% globally, underscoring China’s growing dominance in next-generation digital technologies.
The China Internet Development Report 2025 highlights significant progress in the nation’s information infrastructure, with broadband, 5G networks, and digital services expanding rapidly. By mid-2025, China had 684 million fixed broadband users and over 1.1 billion 5G mobile users, alongside 834 million active IPv6 internet users, representing 75% of all Chinese internet users. These developments support the country’s transition toward a high-quality, digitally driven economy.
China’s quantum computing sector is also expanding, expected to exceed 11.56 billion yuan in 2025, growing more than 30% year-on-year. Similarly, China continues to dominate global e-commerce, with 974 million online shopping users and consistent year-on-year retail growth. The digital cultural sector, including micro-short dramas, fan merchandise, cloud performing arts, and digital games, has reached a “trillion-yuan” scale, further demonstrating China’s leadership in digital innovation.
Industry experts and tech entrepreneurs attending the Wuzhen Summit emphasized AI’s transformative potential. Wang Xingxing of Unitree Robotics highlighted AI’s rapid impact on robotics development, while Han Bicheng of BrainCo showcased the applications of brain-computer interfaces in healthcare, education, and daily life. JD.com founder Liu Qiangdong presented advancements in automated logistics, including a new fully unmanned delivery station, demonstrating how robotics and AI are reshaping commerce.
The Wuzhen Summit gathered over 1,600 participants from 130 countries, offering a platform for China to demonstrate its achievements and set the stage for global collaboration in AI, 6G, robotics, and digital innovation. China’s success in patents and technological breakthroughs positions the nation as a key driver of the global digital economy and next-generation tech ecosystem.
