China is setting an ambitious precedent for the future of global telecommunications by upgrading its efforts to develop 6G technology. The Digital China Summit took place in Fuzhou, where officials not only discussed the significance of the development of 5G technology but also the initiative towards the research and advancement of 6G.
As of 2023, China has formed over 2.64 million 5G base stations and has very strategically executed successful 5G applications into 52 of 97 major economic sectors, which include mining, ports, power grids, and manufacturing. This acceleration of advancement proves China’s consistency in leveraging digital infrastructure for industrial progression.
Moving forward with time, the emphasis is now shifting towards 6G. To showcase this transition, China has developed the IMT-2030 (6G) Promotion Group, which is assigned with promoting domestic research and accelerating global cooperation in future communication technologies. The IMT-2030 (6G) has signed a memorandum of understanding with Europe’s 6G Smart Networks and Services Industry Association (6G-IA), indicating China’s plan to stay a global stakeholder in setting the standards for 6G.
Experts believe that 6G will not only be a faster variant of 5G, but also a convergence of communication with AI, sensing, big data, and cybersecurity, assisting in forming a completely aware and smart digital world. The anticipated capacity of 6G includes ultra low latency, faster data transfer speeds, wider bandwidth, potential for innovative technologies, and intelligent industries.
Regardless of the enthusiasm, researchers state that 6G is in its very early phase, and a global standard is still not in place. Nonetheless, China intends to complete major technological breakthroughs and standardization efforts by 2025, alongside the promotion of commercialization by 2030 onwards.
With the powerful growth of technologies, concerns around cybersecurity become more pressing. Experts have urged stronger cooperation between telecom providers and cybersecurity firms to prevent vulnerabilities that may arise with new digital infrastructure.
China, with determination, expects to lead the next chapter of global digital transformation through its strong investment in R&D, large scale deployment of 5G, and early dedication to 6G advancement.
