During a meeting with Canadian Foreign Minister Anita Anand on Friday, Wang Yi, China’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, stated that Canada may surpass its target of expanding exports to China by 50% by 2030.
Expanding collaboration in all areas
According to Wang, Canada’s exports to China may rise by 100%, strengthening the relationship between the two nations. During the discussion, Anand stated, “Canada is focused on growing our economy and diversifying our trading relationships.” “The Canada-China economic relationship is significant,” she stated. Wang’s three-day visit to Canada is the latest attempt to strengthen ties and the first by a Chinese foreign minister in ten years. Prior to a private meeting on Friday afternoon, he shook hands with Prime Minister Mark Carney.
The two leaders talked on a variety of subjects, including trade, human rights, and foreign meddling, in a “frank and constructive manner,” according to a statement released by Anand’s office following the meeting. In order to strengthen collaboration and eliminate obstacles whenever feasible, both ministers emphasised the significance of preserving steady and trustworthy channels of communication at all levels, according to her office.
Historical ties
In January, Carney became the first Canadian prime minister to visit China since 2017, and the two countries reached a first trade agreement to reduce tariffs on electric cars and canola.
Balancing the US and China
China is Canada’s second-largest trading partner, and since China was targeted by U.S. President Donald Trump’s tariffs, Carney has worked to lessen his nation’s excessive reliance on the United States. Carney has signed more than 20 commercial and security agreements in the past year and has pledged to boost Canadian exports to international countries in the next ten years amid a protracted trade war with the United States.
In a speech in New York, Carney advocated for a “new partnership” with the United States, claiming that a more powerful Canada will “help make America great again.” As Canada strives to balance ties with the US due to its tariffs, China emerges as a reliable companion.
