The Balochistan Fisheries Department has announced the distribution of 92 modern fibreglass boats to low-income fishermen in Gwadar. The initiative comes under a provincial subsidy programme aimed at modernising the fisheries sector.
The scheme, known as the “Green Fibreglass Boats Scheme,” includes 24-foot vessels equipped with 85–90 horsepower engines. Moreover, the boats feature insulated storage to preserve fish quality and reduce spoilage.
Maulana Hidayat-ur-Rehman Baloch was briefed on the project during a visit to the Surbandar fisheries office. He described the initiative as an important step toward improving the economic conditions of coastal fishing communities.
Each boat costs Rs5.295 million. However, the provincial government will cover 90% of the cost. Fishermen will pay the remaining 10%, around Rs529,500, through instalments over four years.
Authorities said they will distribute the boats through a transparent balloting process. In addition, quotas have been allocated based on registered fishermen across coastal districts. Six boats are reserved for Surbandar.
Officials have urged eligible fishermen to apply through their local Fisheries Assistant Director offices within the given deadline.
