Work on the Gwadar Safe City project is progressing, with 164 towers and poles installed at key locations for the planned installation of surveillance cameras, officials said on October 14.
The project aims to transform Gwadar into a modern, secure and smart city through technology-based monitoring and improved security infrastructure.
Project Plans 760 Surveillance Cameras
According to a Safe City project official quoted by Gwadar Pro, the project has an estimated cost of Rs7.5 million. It plans to install 760 modern cameras at 135 important locations across the city.
The surveillance network is expected to cover an area of approximately 145 square kilometres.
Construction of the project’s central complex and command and control centre is also progressing. Officials said the system would become operational once the remaining work is completed.
Advanced Technology for Security and Traffic Management
The project includes several surveillance and monitoring technologies designed to support law enforcement and emergency services.
These include:
- High-resolution CCTV and pan-tilt-zoom (PTZ) cameras
- Facial recognition and vehicle number plate recognition systems
- Thermal cameras and real-time monitoring
- A central command and control centre
- Fibre-optic communication networks
- Solar power backup systems
- Digital data storage and analytics systems
The system is intended to help authorities detect crime, monitor security threats, identify suspicious activity and improve traffic management.
It is also expected to strengthen emergency response and provide additional technological support to law enforcement agencies.
Safe City Project Aims to Support Gwadar’s Growth
Officials said the project could improve public safety and strengthen the environment for business and investment in Gwadar.
A modern surveillance network may also support tourism and commercial activity by improving monitoring and coordination among relevant agencies.
One official described the project as important for Gwadar’s future, citing its potential role in law and order, citizen safety, traffic management and economic development.
The project forms part of wider efforts to develop Gwadar as a modern port city. Its impact will depend on successful implementation, reliable operations and effective coordination among the responsible authorities.
