Pakistan is seeking stronger cooperation with China and other South Asian countries in marine science, ocean conservation, and the blue economy.
Pakistani officials and academics joined more than 100 participants at the China-South Asian Countries Marine Cooperation Forum in Qingdao, Shandong province.
The forum brought together representatives from China, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Maldives, and other regional countries.
New Initiative for Marine Cooperation
Participants adopted the China-South Asian Countries Marine Cooperation Initiative during the forum. The initiative aims to strengthen regional collaboration in marine science and sustainable development.
Discussions focused on three major areas. These included ocean and climate observation, marine ecosystem protection, and sustainable blue economy development.
The participants also discussed forecasting, disaster prevention, ecological restoration, and integrated ocean management.
Pakistan Highlights Ocean Conservation
Pakistani experts contributed to discussions on ocean conservation and climate resilience.
Engr Naimatullah Sohoo, Director General of Pakistan’s National Institute of Oceanography, presented Pakistan’s strategies for protecting marine resources. He also discussed ocean warming and the role of oceans in regulating the climate.
Meanwhile, Prof. Dr Abdul Malik, Vice Chancellor of Lasbela University of Agriculture, Water and Marine Sciences (LUAWMS), delivered a keynote address on marine ecosystem protection.
China Supports Marine Science Education
Prof. Abdul Malik highlighted China’s contribution to marine science development in South Asia. He said Chinese support has helped strengthen marine science education and human resource development at LUAWMS.
The university has also established partnerships with several Chinese institutions. These include the First Institute of Oceanography under China’s Ministry of Natural Resources and Dalian Ocean University.
In addition, LUAWMS has conducted academic exchanges with Chinese universities, including Shandong University.
Opportunities for Joint Research and Technology
The new initiative could create opportunities for Pakistan and China to expand joint research and technology transfer.
Researchers are expected to explore cooperation in marine observation, ecosystem protection, and sustainable blue economy projects.
Moreover, capacity-building programs could help develop expertise in marine science and strengthen regional research networks.
Building a Sustainable Blue Economy
The forum also highlighted the growing importance of the blue economy. Sustainable use of marine resources can support economic activity while protecting fragile ecosystems.
For Pakistan, deeper cooperation with China could support research, education, climate resilience, and marine resource management.
As a result, the new regional initiative provides a platform for broader scientific and institutional cooperation.
