Pakistan’s Maritime Sector Enters New Phase

Pakistan’s maritime sector is entering a new phase of development. The government is pursuing major reforms to strengthen local capacity and promote self-reliance.

The initiatives are being implemented under the Prime Minister’s Task Force on Maritime Reforms. They focus on shipbuilding, ship recycling, shipping, fisheries and aquaculture.

Shipbuilding Activity Resumes in Karachi

For the first time since the 1980s, Pakistan has resumed the construction of commercial shipyards in Karachi.

This development could strengthen the country’s shipbuilding capacity. It may also reduce reliance on foreign facilities for commercial vessel construction.

Moreover, stronger local shipbuilding can support skilled employment and related industries.

National Shipping Fleet to Expand

The Pakistan National Shipping Corporation (PNSC) is expanding its fleet to 54 vessels. The move aims to increase the use of national shipping for transporting domestic cargo.

In addition, the entry of the National Logistics Cell (NLC) into the shipping sector is expected to strengthen domestic cargo transportation.

These steps could improve Pakistan’s logistics capacity and support greater self-reliance in maritime transport.

Focus on Ship Recycling and Fisheries

Relevant institutions are also working to improve ship recycling and fisheries. The government wants to develop these sectors alongside shipping and shipbuilding.

Furthermore, a five-year development plan has been prepared for fisheries and aquaculture.

Supporting Coastal Communities

The fisheries plan aims to increase the incomes of farmers, fishermen and coastal communities. It will focus on expanding fisheries and aquaculture activity over the next five years.

As a result, the reforms could create new economic opportunities for communities connected to Pakistan’s maritime economy.

A Push Toward Maritime Self-Reliance

Overall, Pakistan’s maritime reforms represent a broader push toward domestic capacity and economic self-reliance. Shipbuilding, shipping, recycling and fisheries are all receiving greater attention.

With continued investment and institutional coordination, the maritime sector could become a stronger contributor to Pakistan’s economy and coastal development.
