The CPEC Orange Line Metro Rail Transit System (OLMRTS) in Lahore and the University of Engineering and Technology (UET) Lahore have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU).

The agreement, signed on August 27, aims to strengthen cooperation between academia and the urban rail industry.

Both institutions will work together under the Pakistan Urban Rail Transit Research and Innovation Cooperation Project.

Focus on Urban Rail Innovation

The partnership will combine Orange Line’s operational expertise with UET Lahore’s academic capabilities.

Together, the institutions will address technical and operational challenges in urban rail transit. The initiative will also support applied research, innovation, practical training, and knowledge sharing.

Moreover, the collaboration will help develop local technical expertise for Pakistan’s expanding rail transit sector.

Joint Research Laboratories Planned

A major part of the agreement involves establishing joint research laboratories called “UET Professor Studio.”

The facilities will operate at UET Lahore and the Orange Line Dera Gujran Depot. They will give students and researchers access to practical rail transit challenges.

In addition, faculty members and engineers will gain exposure to a live operational environment.

Students to Gain Practical Experience

Under the MoU, OLMRTS will provide access to relevant operational data and technical facilities. These resources will support academic research and industry-focused development.

Orange Line engineers will also work with UET Master’s and doctoral students on research projects. Undergraduate students may participate in learning and research activities as well.

As a result, the partnership will create stronger links between classroom learning and real-world railway operations.

Orange Line Highlights Technical Priorities

OLMRTS CEO Tan Zidong described the agreement as a new stage in industry-academia cooperation.

He noted that the Orange Line handles around 250,000 passenger trips every day. Therefore, safety, reliability, skilled manpower, and continuous technical improvement remain major priorities.

Supporting Pakistan’s Future Rail Sector

The MoU creates a framework for long-term cooperation in research, technical outreach, and capacity building.

Furthermore, both sides will promote knowledge sharing and community development. The partnership is expected to contribute to the sustainable growth of Pakistan’s railway and urban transit sector.
