Pakistan is preparing to hold the 9th Joint Working Group (JWG) meeting on Gwadar under the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) next week.
A preparatory meeting reviewed completed, ongoing, and proposed projects. Officials also discussed priorities for accelerating Gwadar’s development.
Key Gwadar Projects Reviewed
The meeting reviewed several major CPEC projects in Gwadar. These include Gwadar Port, Gwadar Free Zone, New Gwadar International Airport, East Bay Expressway, and the Pak-China Technical and Vocational Institute.
Officials also assessed water supply and desalination projects. Moreover, they reviewed progress under the Gwadar Smart Port City Master Plan 2017–2050.
Pak-China Friendship Hospital Expansion Proposed
Officials proposed expanding the Pak-China Friendship Hospital as part of future CPEC projects.
The proposal would increase the hospital’s capacity to 300 beds. It also includes plans for a medical college and a nursing college.
The expansion aims to improve healthcare access in Gwadar and Balochistan. At the same time, it could create new opportunities for medical education and professional training.
New Fisheries Projects Proposed
The meeting also proposed developing a modern fish landing jetty and fish harbor at Gwadar’s West Bay, or Padi Zir.
In addition, officials suggested establishing a boat-building industry. The initiative could modernize local fishing facilities, create jobs, and improve business opportunities for fishermen.
Gwadar Port and Free Zone Progress
The Gwadar Port Authority briefed officials on the operational status of Gwadar Port and the Free Zone.
Phase-I of the Gwadar Free Zone has been completed. Meanwhile, development work on the larger Phase-II area is continuing.
Future priorities for Gwadar Port include breakwater construction, dredging of berthing areas and channels, and water supply for industries.
Focus on Gwadar’s Urban Development
Officials stressed that CPEC development in Gwadar extends beyond port and commercial activities.
The broader objective includes improving healthcare, education, water supply, employment, urban infrastructure, and economic opportunities. As a result, authorities aim to support more inclusive development across the city.
Roadmap for the 9th JWG Meeting
The preparatory session was chaired by Planning Commission Secretary Dr. Muhammad Tahir Noor. Senior officials from federal ministries and relevant agencies attended the meeting.
DG Gwadar Development Authority Moeen-ur-Rehman Khan and Gwadar Port Authority DG Operations Dawood Kalmati also participated through video link.
All relevant agencies received instructions to finalize project updates and future priorities. These preparations will help the upcoming JWG make key decisions and set the next development roadmap for Gwadar.
