Chinese President Xi Jinping has ordered all-out search and rescue efforts after a mudslide struck the Gyirong border port in southwest China’s Xizang Autonomous Region on Wednesday.

The disaster occurred after a mudslide from Nepal caused severe casualties at the border port. Xi called for the immediate evacuation of residents at risk and timely medical care for injured people.

Three Killed, 265 Reported Missing

As of 8 p.m., the mudslide had killed three people and left 265 others missing, according to the on-site headquarters.

Authorities are still verifying the casualty figures. Meanwhile, rescue teams continue searching affected areas for survivors and missing people.

Xi Calls for Safe and Scientific Rescue

Xi stressed the need for stronger monitoring and early-warning systems. He also called for scientific rescue operations and measures to prevent secondary disasters.

Furthermore, he urged local authorities to prepare for extreme weather and worst-case scenarios. China is currently in a critical period for flood control.

He also directed officials to strengthen flood and typhoon prevention measures. Authorities must identify and address potential risks to protect lives and property.

Li Qiang Orders Coordinated Relief

Chinese Premier Li Qiang also called for immediate verification of the number of missing and affected people.

In addition, Li instructed the Foreign Ministry to coordinate with relevant countries. He called for timely information sharing and joint efforts to manage rescue and relief operations.

Senior Officials Lead Disaster Response

Vice Premier Zhang Guoqing has led officials from relevant departments to the site. The team is guiding search, rescue, and disaster-response operations.

Meanwhile, authorities in Xizang have mobilized emergency forces. Search and rescue activities remain underway as teams continue assessing the situation.

Authorities Focus on Preventing Further Losses

The Chinese government has placed priority on rescuing missing people and protecting residents in high-risk areas.

As rescue operations continue, authorities are also monitoring conditions to prevent further disasters and reduce additional casualties.
