Punjab has taken another step toward sustainable urban transport with the launch of a fleet of China-manufactured electric buses in Gujrat, strengthening cooperation between Pakistan and China in clean mobility solutions.

Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif inaugurated the Green Electric Bus Service through a video link. The launch ceremony was attended by Deputy Commissioner Noor-ul-Ain Qureshi, MPA Abdullah Yousaf, and other senior officials.

11 Electric Buses Begin Operations

The first phase of the project introduces 11 China-made electric buses on the Gujrat–Mangowal and Gujrat–Daulat Nagar routes.

Authorities plan to expand the fleet to 28 buses by September while adding more routes to improve transportation access across the district.

The initiative is part of Punjab’s broader efforts to modernize public transport and promote environmentally friendly mobility options.

Affordable and Inclusive Public Transport

The new electric buses include facilities such as wheelchair ramps for elderly passengers and people with disabilities, making public transport more accessible.

Moreover, the government has introduced an affordable flat fare of Rs20 to ensure that residents can benefit from the service.

Officials said the project will improve daily commuting for thousands of passengers while providing a cleaner alternative to traditional fuel-based transport.

Pakistan-China Green Technology Cooperation

The launch highlights expanding cooperation between Pakistan and China in clean technology and sustainable urban development.

Chinese manufacturers have increasingly contributed to Pakistan’s transition toward electric mobility by providing advanced transport solutions and technology.

Furthermore, the adoption of electric buses supports Pakistan’s efforts to reduce carbon emissions, lower dependence on fossil fuels, and build climate-resilient cities.

Supporting Punjab’s Green Mobility Vision

Beyond reducing air pollution, the electric bus fleet is expected to decrease long-term operational costs and improve energy efficiency in public transportation.

As a result, Punjab aims to expand clean transport networks across more cities while encouraging wider adoption of electric mobility solutions.

The project reflects the growing partnership between Pakistan and China in sustainable development, innovation, and environmentally responsible infrastructure.
