The Water and Power Development Authority (WAPDA) has signed a contract to construct a new school in Shahi Gyal under the resettlement plan of the Dasu Hydropower Project.
WAPDA signed the agreement on July 16 during a ceremony at the Dasu Hydropower Project office. The initiative aims to provide continuous educational services for communities affected by project activities.
New School to Support Affected Communities
The project will relocate the existing school from Seer Gyal to Shahi Gyal because the original site falls within the development area of the hydropower project.
To ensure smooth relocation, WAPDA coordinated with the provincial Education Department and secured suitable land for the new facility. As a result, local students will continue to access educational services without disruption.
Construction Work to Finish in 18 Months
WAPDA awarded the construction contract to M/s Shams-e-Ilahi. The company will complete the school within 18 months according to the project timeline.
Furthermore, the new school forms part of WAPDA’s wider resettlement efforts to improve facilities for communities connected with the Dasu Hydropower Project.
Dasu Hydropower Project’s Strategic Importance
The Dasu Hydropower Project is one of Pakistan’s largest energy projects. Chinese company China Gezhouba Group Company Limited (CGGC) is constructing the project on the Indus River in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
The project includes a 242-meter-high roller-compacted concrete dam, spillways, diversion tunnels, underground power facilities, and related hydraulic structures.
Boosting Clean Energy Capacity
Once completed, the project will generate 4,320 megawatts of electricity and significantly increase Pakistan’s hydropower capacity.
Moreover, the project will strengthen the country’s renewable energy sector and help meet growing electricity demand through sustainable power generation.
Development Beyond Energy Production
In addition to electricity generation, the Dasu Hydropower Project focuses on improving facilities for nearby communities.
Through planned resettlement initiatives, WAPDA is supporting education, infrastructure development, and social welfare alongside the project’s energy objectives.
