Pakistani Ambassador to China, Khalil Hashmi, emphasized the potential of Chinese artificial intelligence (AI) and related technologies to help developing nations. Speaking on the sidelines of China’s annual Two Sessions, he noted that AI, offered at scale and competitive prices, can support growth in education, agriculture, transport, and sustainable development.
Ambassador Hashmi highlighted China’s global leadership in AI innovation, noting that in 2023, China accounted for 69.7% of global AI patent grants, according to Stanford HAI’s 2025 AI Index. He described China’s AI progress as rooted in indigenous innovation, offering opportunities for collaboration, especially in medical AI, pharmaceuticals, and biotechnology.
Citing examples, Hashmi mentioned that Pakistani doctors recently performed Islamabad’s first robotic adrenalectomy using a Chinese surgical robot. He stressed that stronger collaboration between Pakistani and Chinese researchers can help expand access to affordable medical diagnostics and therapies while fostering broader socioeconomic development across Pakistan.
