China has successfully connected the Tiantai Pumped Storage Power Station in Zhejiang Province to the national grid, marking the country’s largest single-unit-capacity hydropower project. This milestone demonstrates China’s growing capabilities in large-scale hydropower engineering and advanced energy storage technologies.
The first generating unit of the Tiantai station, with a capacity of 425,000 kilowatts, is now operational. The full project will feature four units totaling 1.7 million kilowatts, enhancing grid stability, frequency regulation, and energy storage, while also providing emergency backup and supporting peak shaving for the Zhejiang power system.
With a total investment exceeding 10 billion yuan ($1.42 billion), the Tiantai station is a key initiative under China’s 14th Five-Year Plan (2021-25). Once fully operational, it will significantly strengthen eastern China’s power grid flexibility and reliability, representing a major leap in the country’s sustainable energy infrastructure.
