A cargo ship carrying 65,000 tons of Argentine wheat departed from the Port of Timbues in Santa Fe, Argentina, heading to China. This marks the first commercial wheat export to China since Argentina received Chinese authorization in January 2024.
The shipment, managed by COFCO International, a Chinese state-owned agribusiness, will supply China’s milling industry. Officials say the delivery reflects growing agricultural collaboration between China and Latin America, driven by market demand and economic complementarities.
Gustavo Puccini, Santa Fe’s Minister of Productive Development, called the shipment a “key milestone” in bilateral trade, while Governor Maximiliano Pullaro highlighted its potential to boost economic growth and employment.
Agricultural trade between China and Argentina, already encompassing soybeans, frozen beef, barley, and sorghum, is expected to diversify further, with potential for exports like seafood, wine, and corn. Experts note that such trade strengthens economic ties and benefits local communities in both regions.
