Xi Jinping, chairman of the Central Military Commission (CMC), has signed an order to officially release the new flag designs for four branches of the Chinese People’s Liberation Army (PLA). The flags represent the aerospace force, cyberspace force, information support force, and joint logistics support force. The order was made public ahead of China’s Army Day on August 1.

To mark the 98th anniversary of the PLA’s founding, Xi also sent greetings to all service personnel, including the People’s Armed Police, civilian staff in the military, reserve forces, and militia. The release of these flags is being seen as a key step toward building a more complete and modern military identity.

The new flags will join the existing ones for the army, navy, air force, and rocket force, along with the main PLA flag, to form a full military flag system. According to the Central Military Commission, the branch flags will officially come into use on August 1.

Alongside this announcement, the CMC issued updated rules on how military flags should be used and managed. These changes are meant to make the system more consistent and to protect the value and meaning of the flags through legal measures.

Military officials said the designs were created to reflect the leadership of the Party over the armed forces and to show the importance of these specialized branches. The new flags are also meant to inspire a stronger sense of duty, honor, and unity within the ranks. This announcement is part of a wider effort to modernize and motivate the Chinese military as it moves into a new phase.

That same day, Xi also signed an order to award merit citations to two military units and five service members. At a reception in Beijing, Defense Minister Dong Jun spoke about the PLA’s goals for the future. He said the armed forces will continue to follow Xi Jinping Thought on Strengthening the Military and will stay focused on political discipline, combat training, and readiness.

“We will never tolerate any ‘Taiwan independence’ separatist attempts, and stand ready to promptly defeat any external military intervention,” Dong said. “The PLA is fully prepared to ensure the complete reunification of the motherland.”

He also spoke about China’s broader vision for global cooperation. He said the PLA is willing to work with militaries around the world to face common challenges and build lasting peace. “Together, we aim to build a world characterized by lasting peace, universal security, common prosperity, openness and inclusiveness, and ecological sustainability,” he added.

As Xi Jinping Issues Order to Release PLA Branch Flags, it sends a clear message that China is strengthening its military image, structure, and purpose while staying rooted in tradition and focused on future missions.
