The Pakistan Navy has launched its latest locally designed gunboat, PNS Sahiwal, in a ceremony held at Karachi Shipyard and Engineering Works (KS&EW). The vessel, developed under the Navy’s indigenisation policy, was designed by the Platform Design Wing (PDW) and constructed in collaboration with KS&EW.
The launch event was attended by the Vice Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Ovais Ahmed Bilgrami, along with senior officials from the Ministry of Defence Production (MoDP) and the shipbuilding industry. Speaking on the occasion, Vice Admiral Bilgrami praised the synergy between the PDW and KS&EW, calling the project a major stride in Pakistan’s indigenous shipbuilding capabilities.
Enhancing Operational Capabilities
PNS Sahiwal is equipped with high-performance, long-range semi-automatic guns, allowing it to undertake a wide range of maritime security missions in both coastal and open-sea environments. Its advanced weaponry and design reflect Pakistan’s ongoing efforts to modernise its naval fleet while promoting self-reliance.
Bilgrami noted that the Pakistan Navy is considering the series production of similar vessels, a move that would not only strengthen maritime defence but also boost local shipbuilding capacity and support the broader goal of industrial self-sufficiency.
This development marks a significant milestone in Pakistan’s efforts to enhance its maritime presence and expand indigenous defence manufacturing capabilities.
