Shehbaz Sharif, Pakistan’s Prime Minister, greenlights Gwadar Safe City Project in a meeting with Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi. This marks a substantial effort at enhancing security in one of the most critical hubs of the China Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC). The initiative is in accord with CPEC’s larger purpose of ensuring safe, sustainable growth in strategic economic zones like Gwadar.
During the advanced talk on Sunday, PM Shehbaz Sharif directed the Interior Minister to immediately commence work on the Gwadar Safe City Project. The PM was briefed on the current law and order situation in Balochistan and emphasized the urgency to push the proposal forward to ensure protection for both local communities and foreign nationals in the region.
The approval of this project occurred after almost a decade of its first proposal. Public Sector Development Programme (PSDP) is funding this project, with a budget of Rs4.96 billion, showcasing the government’s dedication to public safety in Gwadar. Officials confirmed that around 30 percent of the work has already been completed.
Advanced real time monitoring systems have been included in the Gwadar Safe City Project, and sensitive locations across the city will have CCTV cameras installed. These systems will enable law enforcement agencies to better monitor, detect, and respond to criminal activities, and will also serve as an essential tool in criminal investigations.
PM Shehbaz Sharif underscored that the Gwadar Safe City Project is a key initiative toward ensuring long term peace and stability in Gwadar. The port city serves as a strategic hub under CPEC, and the Safe City mission is in line with CPEC’s ambitions of advancing connectivity, trade, and regional integration.
The Prime Minister further declared that the Gwadar Safe City Project be completed by June 2026, urging all stakeholders to stay on schedule.
In addition to the security discussions, PM Shehbaz Sharif was briefed on a new policy designed to ease the travel process for Zaireen heading to Iran and Iraq. The Prime Minister directed the Ministry of Aviation to arrange special flights for pilgrims to support the implementation of the new facilitation policy.
The beginning of the Gwadar Safe City Project under PM Shehbaz Sharif’s leadership indicates a broader push to secure sensitive areas and ensure regional stability. Its alignment with CPEC’s objectives reinforces Gwadar’s central role in Pakistan’s development strategy
