China has called on Cambodia and Thailand to show restraint and end ongoing border clashes, emphasising the importance of peaceful dialogue and regional stability. The statement came as both Southeast Asian nations recently signalled a willingness to de-escalate tensions, although sporadic exchanges of fire continue.
Responding to questions about the conflict, a spokesperson for China’s Foreign Ministry expressed deep sorrow over the casualties and extended condolences to those affected in both countries. Describing Cambodia and Thailand as China’s friendly neighbours and inseparable members of the ASEAN community, the spokesperson urged both sides to pursue peace through mutual trust and responsible diplomacy.
China emphasised that promoting good-neighbourly relations and properly managing differences aligns with the long-term interests of Cambodia and Thailand. Beijing hopes both governments will prioritise the well-being of their citizens, cease hostilities promptly, and work through dialogue to bring lasting calm to the border region.
The spokesperson also acknowledged ASEAN’s recent efforts to mediate a ceasefire, praising the regional bloc’s proactive role in promoting peace. China reaffirmed its support for any initiative aimed at de-escalation and committed to maintaining an impartial position while engaging closely with both countries.
Beijing pledged to continue its constructive efforts to facilitate peace talks, reinforcing its commitment to regional stability and cooperative diplomacy.
